TACOMAN IS KILLED BY AUTOThomas W. Shackleford Struck Down While Crossing Street in Seattle
Struck down by an automobile as he was crossing a Seattle street, Monday night, Thomas W. Shackleford, retired attorney of Tacoma, was instantly killed, according to word from that city.
Mr. Shackleford, aged about 65, had had a varied career. In his youth he was a practicing attorney in Duluth, Minn., and had gained considerable prominence when ill-health came upon him. More than 30 years ago he came to Tacoma and had made his home in Seattle and Tacoma ever since, but had not been able to follow his profession. He had been the victim of a previous automobile accident and in late years had been rather feeble.
A familiar character with his cane which he always carried, Mr. Shackleford, for years liked to attend court cases, and was known to all the attorneys.
Chief Deputy Coroner Earl Navin of King county reported the automobile that struck Mr. Shackleford was driven by Eugene P. Young, Seattle. Young reported he was driving about 25 miles per hour and did not see the victim until the instant of the impact. Witnesses said Shackleford was munching a cup cake as he walked across the street.
Thomas W. Shackleford was a brother of the late John A. Shackleford, prominent for many years as an attorney here. A niece, Elizabeth Shackleford, attorney, of Tacoma, survives him. His wife, Martha, lives in Louisville, Ky. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
The following obituary appeared in the Tacoma News & Tribune on Thursday, October 24, 1935:
SHACKLEFORD-private services for Thomas W. Shackleford Thursday at 9 a.m. at the Buckley-King funeral church with Rev. R.H. McGinis officiated; cremation. The ashes will be sent to Frankford, Ky. for burial.
